El Palmar is where the battle of Trafalgar drifted to. (It was called Trafalgar because at the time that was the nearest naval marker point.) The story of Nelson and that battle especially had always fascinated me because of how much British history is based on that one event.

I had no idea of this location when I came across the place. I was busking and camping around Spain in 2004 and I happened upon it after walking from Conil, south along the beach looking for a spot to camp. El PaImar had no proper infrastructure at the time so was not on the map for tourists. I suddenly came across a random bar at the very end of a ramshackle strip of land. It had one very drunk Spaniard in it, and the owner was from England and was playing Paco De Lucia, it seemed rude not to stay and get drunk.

I stayed there for about a week, and met some amazing characters and people living off the grid. I jammed at someone's birthday party and then they invited me to stay there with them and go surfing in Portugal the next week. I was tempted to give up my life in England on the spot and planned to figure out a way to get back there. If I had not moved to Australia in 2007, I was going to head back to El Palmar to live, something captured me about the place.

I wrote all these songs camped up on the beach outside that bar in El Palmar, the same place that the wreckage would have washed ashore from the battle.
